Recent nucleosynthesis results from INTEGRAL

چکیده
Since its launch in October 2002, ESA’s INTEGRAL observatory has enabled significant advances to be made in the study of Galactic nucleosynthesis. In particular, the imaging Ge spectrometer SPI combines for the first time the diagnostic powers of high resolution gamma-ray line spectroscopy and moderate spatial resolution. This review summarizes the major nucleosynthesis results obtained with INTEGRAL so far. Positron annihilation in our Galaxy is being studied in unprecented detail. SPI observations yield the first sky maps in both the 511 keV annihilation line and the positronium continuum emission, and the most accurate spectrum at 511 keV to date, thereby imposing new constraints on the source(s) of Galactic positrons which still remain(s) unidentified. For the first time, the imprint of Galactic rotation on the centroid and shape of the 1809 keV gamma-ray line due to the decay of Al has been seen, confirming the Galactic origin of this emission. SPI also provided the most accurate determination of the gamma-ray line flux due to the decay of Fe. The combined results for Al and Fe have important implications for nucleosynthesis in massive stars, in particular Wolf-Rayet stars. Both IBIS and SPI are searching the Galactic plane for young supernova remnants emitting the gamma-ray lines associated with radioactive Ti. None have been found so far, which raises important questions concerning the production of Ti in supernovae, the Galactic supernova rate, and the Galaxy’s chemical evolution.

Gamma-Ray Line Astrophysics and Stellar Nucleosynthesis: Perspectives for INTEGRAL
Nuclear γ-ray lines constitute the most genuine diagnostic tool of nuclear astrophysics, since they allow for an unambiguous identification of isotopic species. Continuous improvement in instrumentation led to the discovery of several radioactive species in the past 15 years (Al, Co, Co, Ti) in various astrophysical sites (SN1987A and SN1991T, Cas-A, the Milky Way disk). These discoveries boost...

Gamma-ray line observations provide a versatile tool for studies of nucleosynthesis processes and supernova physics. In particular, the observation of radioactive species in the interstellar medium probes recent nucleosynthesis activity on various time-scales for different kinds of sources. Considerable progress in gamma-ray instrumentation during the last decades has led to the discovery of se...

A general review of the relevance of classical novae for the chemical evolution of the Galaxy, as well as for Galactic radioactivity is presented. A special emphasis is put on the pioneering work done by Jim Truran in this field of research. متن کاملFe in the Milky Way : implications of the RHESSI detection of 60 Fe
The recent detection of gamma-ray lines from radioactive 26 Al and 60 Fe in the Milky Way by the RHESSI satellite calls for a reassessment of the production sites of those nuclides. The observed gamma-ray line flux ratio is in agreement with calculations of nucleosynthesis in massive stars, exploding as SNII (Woosley and Weaver 1995); in the light of those results, this observation would sugges...
متن کاملInhomogeneous Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis in Light of Recent Observations
We consider inhomogeneous big bang nucleosynthesis in light of the present observational situation. Di erent observations of He and D disagree with each other, and depending on which set of observations one uses, the estimated primordial He corresponds to a lower baryon density in standard big bang nucleosynthesis than what one gets from deuterium. Recent Kamiokande results rule out a favorite ...
